Hodgdon H110

H110 is the spherical powder that screams "no wimps, please!" It delivers top velocities with top accuracy in the 44 Magnum, 454 Casull, 475 Linebaugh and the 460 and 500 S&W magnums. Silhouette shooters claim it is the most accurate 44 powder they have ever used. In addition, H110 is "the" choice for 410 Bore shotgun, especially among top competitive skeet and sporting clays shooters. It handles all 2 1/2", 1/2 oz. loads, as well as all 11/16 oz. loads for the 3" version. Available in 1 lb., 4 lb. & 8 lb. containers.

Bullets will usually feed properly if a GI or factory round is used to set the seating die, if the seating punch corresponds to the standard bullet configuration. These loads were developed with cases formed from .44 AMP brass; cases formed from rifle brass may have less capacity, requiring a reduction in charges to maintain equal pressures. Loads 5, 7, 8 and 11 will not produce reliable gun cycling and may be increased from .5 to one grain to do so. They are included to show the relatively high pressure and velocity levels which are essential with the AMP pistol; it doesn't like light loads. Loads two and three are the most versatile of the lot, and are the standard loads adopted by many owners of .357 AMP pistols. Zeroed at 100 yards, these loads drop roughly 8 inches at 200 yards, with standard open sights.

Chronograph set-up: Oehler Model 31 Chronotach with Oehler Model 51 electronic screens; screen spacing ten feet. Update: Alliant Powder Company does not recommend Blue Dot in the .357 magnum using 125-grain bullets. Recipes for heavier bullet weights are acceptable. Their new tests on recent powder samples have shown high pressure spikes that can damage personal property or injure you. For this reason we removed all 125-grain Blue Dot data from .357 magnum tables.

Lead Cast Loads All loads were fired through the 5.5-inch barrel of a Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 Magnum clamped in a Caldwell Handgun Accurizing Mechanical Machine Rest. Cartridges of the World All loads were developed in a Thompson/Center Contender pistol with a 10-inch barrel. These loads are not recommended for any other handgun. The 45 Winchester Magnum develops 72 percent higher velocity and 200 percent greater muzzle energy than the standard 45 Automatic and is in the same class as the 44 Magnum revolver cartridge. With its rimless case, it is a natural for use in a semi-automatic rifle. Having made this suggestion, if this ever happens, this author can claim that it was all his idea. The Wildey 45 Magnum, along with the 44 Auto Mag, the Desert Eagle and the LAR Grizzly are the only automatic pistols that truly qualify as big game handguns. The potential is there for a fine combination silhouette and hunting pistol. The price is high, and for strictly silhouette shooting, the much lower-priced Thompson/Center Contender in the same chambering might appeal to many potential buyers. The availability of commercial ammunition with hunting-type bullets would also be a factor, although there is a good variety of such bullets available to the handloader. NOTES FROM THE LAB - The 7.62mm Tokarev (aka 7.62x25mm Russian Tokarev) was adopted as the official Soviet military pistol cartridge around 1930 in the Models TT-30 and TT-33 auto-loading pistols. Surplus guns (made in several different countries) eventually began finding their way to the US in the late 1980's. Quality varied significantly; however, both guns and ammunition were inexpensive and many are currently in circulation. The test pistol used here was a CZ Model 52, one of the better quality guns offered in the chambering. Most surplus ammunition is Berdan primed and is usually corrosive. Barrel groove diameter has a rather large variance, with many pistols utilizing .311 to .312 inch bullets. To develop handload data Starline cases were used (available direct at 800-280-6660). These are intended to house .308-inch bullets and will require neck reaming if .311- to .312-inch bullets are used. The Hornady 90-grain HP-XTP currently has a .309-inch diameter, which seated correctly and functioned properly in the CZ 52. Bullets had a tendency to tilt during seating; however, with care they could be straight in the rather short case neck. A crimp was applied as a separate step using a Lee Factory Crimp Die. Some "start" loads did not produce enough pressure to reliably operate the action on the test pistol, but all maximum loads functioned flawlessly.
